Time to renew....

Murphy's Mom here...

I need some opinions about pet insurance. Its almost time to renew Murphy's policy, and I am really not happy with VPI and their coverage.

Does anyone have any suggestions on which policys are better than others? I would love to get your feedback!

I asked around on forums about pet insurance for a month or so before purchasing Duchess' plan. Most people said they were unhappy with your provider so I didn't go with them.

We went with Petplan and have been happy with them so far. I've had two claims and both were paid for quickly. Also, they covered procedures that weren't covered by other providers.

I wish they'd cover spay/neuter though... that's my only gripe, but I don't think any of the companies covered that.

We can't help because we don't have pet insurance. Good luck!

We're covered by Trupanion. www.trupanionpetinsurance.com
I liked them because they covered the main things I was looking for (accidents and illnesses) including hip dysplasia and I wasnt paying for things I wouldnt use (spay/neuter - we got insurance after Dar was spayed). They don't cover vaccinations, which Im fine with because that's a cost I would expect to pay anyway with having a dog.
I also liked them because we had total control over choosing how much we wanted for our deductible and that determined how much we would pay monthly (higher deduc. = lower monthly).
We filed our first claim Monday morning, and by Monday afternoon it had already been processed. Our refund has already paid back our annual cost for insurance.
I used this website to do some research:

It's an overwhelming thing, looking/choosing insurance. Good luck!

I don't live in America so can't really help but the one thing that I always look for is a policy which covers for the life of the pet. A lot of these pet insurance companies are sneaky and if you read the small print, the cover stops after the dog reaches a certain age - and really, it's usually when the dog reaches their senior years that they start having health problems and you need the insurance! Back in NZ, it was like 8yrs for "normal" dogs and as early as 5yrs for giant breeds!! So we have always gone with the company that covers for life. Check the small print!

Sorry we don't carry pet insurance but that is something I have been thinking about. I will be interested in what others have to say....

Terribly sorry. We recently read a post about insurance we were interested in, and we lost track. We're getting it too.
