Mom said it was that time of the year. Time to go to the Betterinarian for my annual exam and vaccinations. Ruh Roh! That doesn't sound like much fun!!
Luckily, their office is only about 3 blocks away from our house, so ever since I was little me & Mom would stop in often on our walkies just to say "woof!" and get a few treats. That means I'm not scared to go at all!
Ok...I take dat back a little. Going in and sayin "woof" to the receptionists and gettin cookies is one thing...havin to go into an exam room is a COMPLETELY different experience! I was a little nervous, but Mom just ignored my nerves and kept makin me do different obedience commands (sit, down, stand...all things I'm pretty good at!) to keep my mind off of things.
Since Fergie had an upper respiratory infection when we first got her, she hadn't gotten any of her shots yet so she got to come along! I think Mom shoulda bought a bigger carrier...she looks like she's gonna outgrow this one pretty quick!
She was a lil more tentative about comin out of her carrier this time.
But she once she was out, she did lots of explorin!
Fergie just got her FVRCP vaccination. She'll get another one in 3 weeks and that will probably be it for the rest of her life. Since she's an indoor kitty only, her risk of exposure is super duper low. Lucky for her, she won't have to get a rabies shot at all!
I was a good boy and laid down patiently waitin for my checkup. The Betterinarian said I look GREAT!! She said Mom was doin an excellent job of keepin me at a good weight. So many doggies are obese, its so sad. Not only is it hard on their joints and skeletal system, but bein overweight is also hard on their heart and can cause them not to live as long as they should! Its even more important for giant breed doggies like me. In a dog who is at a healthy weight, you should be able to feel the ribs super easy. Even if the last rib is visible a little...that's ok! Obviously, you woudn't want all the ribs to show, and if the backbone or hip bones are visible then your pup is too thin, but Mom feels its much more healthy to be a little on the underweight side than overweight at all.
Mom really likes my Betterinarian cuz she doesn't push vaccines on me. She drew some blood to do an antibody titer test, and if the titer comes back low, then I'll probably have to get vaccinated, but if the my antibody levels are high then we get to wait til next year and do the test again!
Since I go to the dog park, and dog beach, and lots of doggie festivals, I did have to get a Bordatella vaccine. Luckily, it wasn't a shot though, all she did was put some funny stuff up my nose.

Good to go the the vet once in awhile. I like my Dr. too! Have a fun day! Fergie is a cutie!
Does sound like a good doc. We are curious about these titers... I did a bunch of research only to find Moose got a 3-yr vaccine last year so he is not due for most of them for awhile. Which titers was your vet running? Rabies or other core vaccines? Could I be nosey and ask what it costs? If you would rather not respond in comments you can email me at labramoose at gmail dot com. If you don't wont to go into it I totally understand and won't be offended if you don't respond!
I totally agree about being on the thinner side of ideal. Much easier on the joints. I got moose down to the lower end of ideal but felt he got a bit to thin so I am giving him a bit more kibble to fill him in a tiny bit. You should see the girl I am fostering now. She is a lab who weighs 98lbs but should be 80-85. Poor girl. We are working on it!
Glad to hear that you are so healthy Murphy! We like our vets because they all give us lots of treats when we have our exams and they are very gentle with us.

You're so lucky to have found a vet who is open-minded & understanding about vaccines - they are quite rare! :-)
And that's a great chart to show what healthy doggies should look like. My hip & spine bones were jutting out really badly which was why my humans thought I needed more weight, even though the vets here all thought I looked fine - but then they're not very experienced with giant breeds!
