Since I love love love the beach so much, Mom decided to sign me up for the Helen Woodward Suf Clinic. The cool folks who put together the fundraising events were offering these clinics in preparation for their Surf Dog Surf-a-thon on September 12th. Today was the big day...I was gonna become a surf dog!
I was ready. Made sure Mom got me to the event early so I could grab the longboard. I figured a big dog needed a big board!
Dis neon green one was perfect. Even matched my collar! Only problem was the flowers on it. Kinda girly if you ask me, but I guess it'll hafta do.
Mom, of course, brought that flashy camera beast with her so of course she had to have someone take our picture together.
This was serious though. I had to pay attention...check out da waves...I was tryin to read the water to see how the waves were breaking. I needed to study da water so I could master it once I got in.
Sheesh Mom! Put dat thing down already and LETS GO!!
Ok! One more picture of my awesome instructors, and then lets GO!!
woah! Once I actually got out on da water, I quickly realized this isn't as easy as it looks!
Sheesh, guys! I got a tall center of gravity, and no body told me the surf board was gonna move!
Ok, maybe layin down is the way to go...
at least the dang surf board isn't tippin all over da place now!
WOAH! You want me to actually RIDE that wave!?! I'm outta here!
Ok, lets try this again. Slow and steady...let me get my balance...
wipe out!!!
Dang! Don't let nodoggie tell you surfing is easy! Its definitely NOT! It takes a lot of talent and skill! Even Mom didn't realize how tough it was gonna be!
I definitely couldn't of done it without my fabulous team though. They were awesome and had some of the best surfdog experience out there! Here's another picture with my pawsome team...
Judy to the left of Mom is Surfdog Ricochet's Mom. Boy did she have some good pointers! (my personal favorite was dat can of cheese whiz!) Kneeling behind me is Peter. He surfs with Nani the surf diva. We saw both Ricochet & Nani at the surfdog competition held earlier in the year. It was pawsome to have such expertise standing beside me!
After that last wipeout, Mom decided I'd had enough and we got to head back to shore (whoohooo! back on solid ground!) and watch some of our other doggie friends take their lessons.
Ginger, one of my bffs, did awesome! She caught the first wave she went out for and even rode it for a bit!
But then that ole gravity tripped her up, and she had a pretty spectacular wipeout herself.
Don't worry though. She recovered quickly and even got back on the board to catch a few more waves!
Next up was Jack. His human is Dawn, from Leash Your Fitness...so of course he's a natural!
Check it out! He even showed off a little backwards surfing! Pretty cool, huh!?!
Lastly, it was Rilee's turn. She's a labradoodle, so of course she was a natural also. Check out those awesome ringlets of hair! Aint she pretty?!?
Here she is, actin like a pro after 1 lesson and waiting for the exactly perfect wave.
She rode one wave all the way in to shore! Way to go, Rilee!
Ginger was even waiting at the shore to congratulate her!
Hopefully Mom will bring some more protective gear for herself next time. She came away from the surf clinic with a tiny cut on her foot (wimp!), and a big scratch on her thigh which has now turned all kinds of black, purple and blue colors! She's tryin to blame it on me, but I think its her own fault...whose big idea was dis anyhow!?!
She says she'll live though, so I can't wait to get back out there one more time!
Hang Twenty Dude's & Dudettes!

Woah Murphydog!! You were surfing. Kona say's you're officially crazy in her book. It looks like you had a great team out there to help you out. I bet you'll catch some waves on your big-boy-board next time!
Holy Cat crap... Murphy you've gone crazy. Have you hit a mid-puppy crisis? Dontcha know that Danes are suppose to stay on the couch, not on the ocean like some crazy hooman. Whoasa the heat must be gettin' to you -- you're going back?

OH MY GOD, Murphy - you always do the COOLEST things!!!!!!! Good on you for showing that giant doggies can try their paw at anything! Am so proud of you!
(Although I do have to say - I think this surfing thing - like so many things - seems to be an activity that favours smaller doggies with lower centres of gravity...sigh...so unfair!)
Still, I think you did AWESOME!! I just LOVE all the pictures of you - I mean, hey, a Dane just going out that far in the ocean is an achievement already, isn't it? I wish there was something like that here in Australia coz I'd love to give it a try too! :-)
Slobbers,
Honey the Great Dane
